When I wake the next morning, the first thing I notice is how good I feel. My arms are wrapped around Erika. Her hair, released from the tight ponytail last night, falls across my makeshift pillow, tickling my cheek. Sun streams in from the only window of the cabin and the single ray of light falls across her face, illuminating her soft skin and pink lips, making her appear angelic. If I was a religious man, I’d say it was a sign, but I don’t need a higher being to tell me that this is my woman.

I lie still for as long as I can, enjoying the moment.

I felt trepidation about coming home. I didn’t think there was anything here for me. But I’m beginning to think that’s not true. I’ve found something for me right here, something that’s real. Something that’s all mine.

Erika’s breathing changes, and her eyes flicker. She sees me watching her, and they jolt all the way open.

“Morning beautiful.”

She frowns. “Were you watching me sleep?”

My lips tug up in a smile at her suspicious nature.

“I didn’t want to disturb you.”

She raises her head, and my arm screams out as blood rushes back into it.

We both sit up, and I slowly rotate my arm. A look of concern crosses her face.

“Sorry, you should have woken me.”

Her concern is sweet, but it takes more than a dead arm to put me out.

“It’s just an arm. It’ll be alright.”

It’s cold out of the blankets and I lay back down and pull her toward me, not ready to get up yet.

“Do you remember your dream last night?”

I check her face for pity, but it’s not there. Just concern and curiosity.

“Not really.” It’s not every night. They come at me suddenly. “It’s a hazard of the job, I guess.”

Occasional bad dreams and a burst eardrum is nothing compared to what happened to some guys I served with. I don’t think a man or woman comes back from war without scars. On the inside or outside.

“It’s not that bad,” I tell her truthfully. “Just bad dreams every once in a while.”

Erika nods slowly, and I’m thankful she asks no more questions.

Her hand reaches out and smooths my hair. Her touch is electric on my skin, and I have a powerful urge to kiss her again.

My hand snaps to her wrist and I close my hand over it, rolling her onto the floor and pinning her down. Her eyes widen in surprise and excitement.

I’m excited too. I want to show her that I may be damaged, but I can still do everything she needs a man to do.

My lips meet hers and I kiss her hungrily, loving the taste of her, loving that she’s kissing me back.

Her hands run through my hair and she tries to roll me off her, but I’m too strong for her.

“You want me to stop?”

“No.” She bites her lower lip, looking frustrated. “I want to be on top.”

The laugh bursts out of me at the way she’s pouting.

“I don’t think so, sweetheart.
